How to Get to the Beach with a Baby in Tow

Hey mamas!

As a new mom, I had no idea how to keep my baby (and myself) entertained. So I just leaned into what I already loved: the beach. If you’re reading this I’m guessing you've just had a baby (congrats, by the way!) and you’re itching to get out and enjoy the sunshine. But the thought of dragging a tiny human and all their gear to the beach feels... a bit daunting, even overwhelming, right? I’ve been there. And guess what? You can totally do this.

8 Tips for a Successful Trip to the Beach with Baby

1. Safety first.

Check the surf report and make sure you know conditions are good (not too windy, not high surf, etc) before you go. Highly recommend sticking to beaches with lifeguards and enclosed lagoons like Magic Island Lagoon.

2. Timing is everything.

Babies love routines, and catching the beach during their happiest time of day is key. Early mornings or late afternoons are perfect – cooler temps and fewer crowds. Avoid the heat of the day and high UV (11am-2pm our ‘ohana loves the water, but we do our best to stay out of the sun)

3. Pack light, but smart.

Think of the essentials. You probably don’t need that much stuff, but you’ll definitely want to have the following:

  • A big, comfy beach blanket (ideally waterproof)
  • A pop-up shade or umbrella (I ditched this a few months in because it was too clunky, but you do you)
  • Diapers and wipes (in a small waterproof pouch)
  • A change of clothes for baby
  • Snacks (frozen grapes and watermelon are my fave) and plenty of water for you
  • A soft towel and baby-safe sunscreen (if your baby is old enough for it: I like this one)
  • High waisted bottoms helped me feel comfortable postpartum, a big hat and sunnies also helped me get out the door

4. Babywearing helps

Strollers and sand? Not always that fun. But bringing a carrier and a stroller can be beneficial. A baby carrier keeps your hands free and baby snug while you navigate. Make sure they stay cool in the summer months. And, if you do bring your stroller, try pulling it backwards across the sand. If your back wheels are larger than your front, it can be quite a bit easier to maneuver that way.

5. Pick a good spot

Look for shaded areas or bring your own beach tent. Make sure you’re at a beach with a lifeguard. Stay close to facilities for easy diaper changes and quick rinses, and ramps that are stroller accessible.

6. Keep cool and comfy

Babies overheat quickly, so avoid the heat of the day, stay in the shade and keep them in light clothing and a cute little hat. And don’t forget to keep yourself hydrated, too!

7. Manage expectations

This isn't your pre-baby beach day. Maybe you're only there for an hour or two – and that's totally fine. Enjoy the little wins.

8. Capture the memories

Take some sweet photos, but also just soak in the moment. These tiny beach toes won’t be tiny forever.

You got this, mama!
